Limits and best practices

What protection can and cannot do

Disable Right Click RB deters casual copying: the visitor who right-clicks to save a photo, selects a paragraph to paste elsewhere, or drags an image to the desktop. That covers most everyday content theft.

No client-side technique can stop a determined visitor. Everything a browser displays has already been downloaded, so it can still be read from the page source, a browser’s reader mode, a screenshot or a script. Plan for that:

  • For images, use embedded watermarking — it stays on the picture even when it is downloaded or screenshotted.
  • For text, protection buys time and discourages, but your copyright and, where needed, a DMCA notice are the real remedy.

Usability

  • Keep links usable. Visitors often right-click a link to open it in a new tab. With PRO, add a to the element allowlist.
  • Mind forms. Blocking Ctrl/⌘+C/X/V/A also blocks pasting into fields. Do not use it on pages with contact, comment or checkout forms, or limit protection with Where so those pages stay open.
  • Explain, do not puzzle. Turn on the message so a blocked action has a visible reason.
  • Exempt your team. Add Administrator and Editor under Exceptions.

Accessibility

Screen readers, keyboard navigation and browser zoom are not blocked: protection acts on the mouse menu, selection and specific shortcuts only. Blocking text selection does make it harder for some people to read along or to translate text, so consider protecting only the content types that need it rather than the whole site.

SEO and performance

  • Search engines read the HTML, which is unchanged, so protection has no effect on indexing or rankings.
  • The protection script is small, has no dependencies and loads only on pages where protection is active.
  • Embedded watermarks are generated once per image and then served from the stored copy. Pages with many new images may take a moment on their first view.
  • With a page cache or CDN, clear the cache after changing settings so visitors get the new behaviour.

Troubleshooting

Protection does not seem to work — you are probably logged in with an exempt role. Check in a private window.

It works on posts but not on the homepage or archives — with Only on selected content types, protection applies to single pages of those types only. Switch Where to Everywhere on the site, or use PRO precision scope.

Embedded watermark is not shown — the server may lack the GD library (the plugin tells you when saving), the image may match an exclusion, or a cache is serving older pages.
